The University of Concepción, also known by its acronym UdeC, is a private university in Chile, and one of the longest standing and prestige of their country, considered by its large size complex research in various areas of knowledge. It is the third oldest university in Chile, and one of the twenty-five universities belonging to the Council of Rectors of Chilean Universities, and of these, the first of the center-south of the country, besides being the first corporation in becoming private law and belong to the Southern Cross University Network.

Its headquarters are located in the city of Concepcion, and also has two other offices in Chillán and Los Angeles.

The University of Concepción is listed as the second university in Chile according to the classification webometric the CSIC, the fifth, as ranked by El Mercurio, and as the third ranking according to the American Economics and Latin American Ranking SIR 2010. According to the latter, is also within the top 25 universities in Latin America.

In the 2011 ranking of the QS World University Ranking was positioned at number 12 throughout Latin America, gaining third place in Chilean universities.

By the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, various penquista intellectuals, including the directors of the Liceo de Concepción, began to advocate the construction of a house of studies for the central-south, that allows to study careers outside of the capital. However, a project of this magnitude required a hitherto non-existent organization. In February 1917, the newspaper El Sur reported that:

On March 23, 1917 held its first official meeting for the benefit of two initiatives: the construction of a teaching hospital and a university for the city.

After discussion, it was decided to establish a committee responsible for the construction of a top research center for the entire south and a Hospital. It was thought that the two projects had to work together, basically because the hospital would become the basis of the School of Medicine of the University.

In 1917 the Lodges 2 and 13 formed the committee for pro University and Hospital, noting that the initial impulse of the house of studies were Enrique Molina Garmendia and two men from the ranks of Peace and Concord: Pedro Nolasco, the precursor, and Virginia Gomez, the founder.

The commission was composed of 33 personalities penquista events, including Enrique Molina Garmendia highlights, Edmundo Larenas Guzman and Dr. Virginio Gomez.

After the meeting, the committee pro-university decided to appoint a board to head the movement. The board was composed of 17 people. Enrique Molina Garmendia remain as president, Virginio Gomez and Esteban Iturra as vice-presidents, and Edmundo Larenas as one of the 10 directors. In memory of these characters, there are currently buildings and streets with their names.

The commission then began working to draft laws to be submitted to Congress for the founding of the university.

These were presented and approved at the May 14, 1919 the rector of Liceo de Concepción (now Liceo Enrique Molina) Enrique Molina Garmendia founded the university, and Molina Garmendia becoming its first president and the great driver.

The University of Concepción is divided into three branches, all belonging to cities in the Bío Bío Region: Los Angeles, Chillán and Concepción. Chillán Campus

This campus is located in the city of Chillán, the geographical center of Chilean agriculture, with an area of ​​100 acres 2 miles distant from the main square.

It was founded in November 1954 along with his career in agronomy, international program from Chillán Plan, with support from the Ministry of Agicultura and the Institute of Inter-American Affairs of the United States. This program has the mission to develop the highest level Agricultural Sciences with a prestigious group of agricultural professionals with graduate training in universities in the U.S. and Europe, which went to form the basis of faculty on campus. This, coupled with the contribution in laboratories, equipment, library facilities and specialized techniques, allowed the campus in those years took the lead in this field nationally.

Its continued development, necessitated the creation of other university courses related to agricultural and forestry activities in the region, giving birth to Veterinary Medicine in 1973, Forest Engineering in 1977 (currently on campus Concepción) and Civil Engineering Agriculture in 1988.

Currently, Campus Chillán has three faculties and two independent runs belonging to their respective faculties on campus Concepción (Business and Law Engineering), with a population of approximately 1400 students, 115 academic and administrative 248 in 2011.

The Campus Chillán has agreements with leading universities and research institutes in the United States, Germany, Spain, Britain, Holland, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina and Peru.

Campus Los Angeles

The campus was born in 1962 in Los Angeles at the request of the provincial community of Bío Bío then rector of Don David Stitchkin Branov and contributions made by the State Deputy Rioseco Manuel Vásquez. In 1963 he opened the career of Topography. In 1966 Race starts Forestry Technicians, its current headquarters was built by the architect, Mr. Ronald Ramm, and created the committee to support local policy management.
